The Value of Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day is a holiday that’s celebrated every year on February 14th. It is a significant cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of romance and love in many regions around the world. It is also known as Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine. Valentine’s Day is the celebration of love, often shared between couples (but doesn’t have to be-i.e GALentine’s Day). Celebrations usually include sending greetings cards, gifts, flowers or chocolate to those you love. This holiday is also celebrated on July 6th and July 30th in the Eastern Orthodox Church, but February 14th which is associated with the Western Christian church and is most well known date for the holiday worldwide.
After asking several students at Newport Harbor we found that students who are currently in relationships planned on spending Valentine’s Day with their boyfriend or girlfriend. However the students who were not currently involved in a relationship did not have any Valentine’s plans and did not care much or have any interests for the holiday. This is mostly likely due to the idea that you need a significant other in order to celebrate. But, you can still celebrate this day of love with others, including your family or friends! In fact, Galentine’s Day celebrations are becoming increasingly popular as well as just giving gifts to your close friends! When we asked around for teachers’ opinions, we got quite different responses. Most teachers said that they and their significant other do not see Valentine’s Day as a big deal. Most adults have aged out of seeing Valentine’s Day as a holiday of great importance. When asked about his opinion on Valentine’s Day, Dr. Naasz said “my wife and I do not typically make a big deal out of the holiday because we do not need it in order to express our deep love for one another.” How cute! We hope all of you spent your Valentine’s Day with those you love, doing the things you love. Whether that be your family, your friends or your significant other 🙂
Happy V-Day from the Beacon team!
