Ski Week

Newport Harbor High School’s “ski week, or “president’s break” takes place from February 19th to February 23rd. This break is spent by most enjoying the cold weather, which barely goes below 60 degrees, but that’s freezing for most students who have lived in sunny California all their life. Some students will be going skiing or snowboarding in popular spots, such as Mammoth, Magic Mountain or Big Bear.
Some who do not enjoy the change of temperature might travel to warmer locations, such as Hawaii or Palm Springs. Others will be hanging out with friends or catching up on sleep. Teachers have assigned some major or minor projects for their students to take time to work on, but we all know you won’t be doing it until the Sunday before school starts again! Despite this fact, Audrey Schrock tells us “I will be spending this break to catch up on my classes and make sure to start the beginning of the semester with grades better than ever!” Mary Maloney intends to “sleep in every day in order to avoid getting sick again.”
Newport Harbor’s students consist of many rowers, from either NAC or Seabase. Their season is just beginning so their break will not be very relaxing. Fault line, the first race, takes place at the end of the break. These athletes will be traveling to Oakland to compete in several different races. Paige Bryant explains that “this race will be one of the most important, determining a teams ranking for the rest of the season.” Also, the Newport Harbor Surf Team will travel to Nicaragua for an amazing experience. The waves are amazing and so is the weather. Henry Jeremias tells us, “this will be a trip to remember for the rest of my life! I have been counting down the days for weeks now!” Many schools do not get this break, so be thankful for a much needed week off. Enjoy your (hopefully) stress-free week!
