As Thanksgiving quickly approaches, it is important to remember those around us and take action in make the lives of those around us better. One of the ways we can do this is by giving back to the community. ASB, as well as many clubs, are getting Newport Harbor involved by holding several fundraisers to donate to those in need.  Here are a few ways students at Newport Harbor are giving back.

Make-A-Wish club continues their tradition this year and holds their annual fundraiser in support of the Make-A-Wish foundation that grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. By motivating students to donate with the prize of seeing one of their teachers in a turkey costume for a day, this fundraiser is always successful with this amusing incentive.

The three teachers this year that are in the running to wear the turkey costume this year are Mr. Melstrom, Mr. Ledon, and Mrs. Taravella. The contest ends on Monday, November 20. Make sure to donate to your favorite teacher’s folder in your classes and look for Mr. Melstrom, Mr. Ledon, or Mrs. Taravella rocking their turkey ensemble!

Another way to help those in need is the annual Food Drive run by ASB. For most, having a meal on Thanksgiving is a given, but not everyone has that luxury. ASB is trying to accommodate to homeless families in Orange County through asking for canned food in everyone’s 3rd-period classroom. The Drive ends on Tuesday so make sure to bring any canned food you have to your classrooms for the chance to win a pizza party!
