Club Corner: FCA

Welcome to FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes)! Each month at lunch we have a new athlete or pastor come and speak about their life experiences. Our meeting are held in the big gym. We offer free pizza to everyone after the meeting, so don’t miss out! Remember, you don’t have to be a Christian or an athlete to attend, we’re just glad you’re there. Our last speaker was Stephen Angulo, the Junior High pastor at Saint Andrew’s Church and FCA member. This month, he spoke to us about the story of the Good Samaritan. In this parable, Jesus was being questioned by a teacher of the Law. The teacher asked, “what must I do to in
herit eternal life?” Jesus asked him what the Law said. He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ ‘You have answered correctly,’ Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”
But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” So Jesus told the story of a Jewish man who was robbed, lying on the side of the road about to die when his enemy, a Samaritan man, saved him when no one else would. Keep in mind that at this time, the Jewish and the Samaritans were bitter rivals. In Luke 10: 30-35 it says, “ In reply Jesus said: ‘A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii a
nd gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’” Imagine this in your own life. You are attacked and left to die, and none of your friends will stop to help you. Then, your worst enemy walks by, and they see you on the ground. They stop. They pick you up, run you to the hospital and save your life. And then, they pay for all your expenses. We learned that this is what Jesus wants for us. We have been called to love our neighbors as ourselves. Next time you see someone in need or alone, help them, reach out to them. Know that you can make a difference.
